A popular four-seasons vacation destination nestled in the Northeastern corner of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. Monroe County is dotted with sparkling lakes and streams and surrounded by gentle mountains. As far back as the 1800's, people flocked to the Pocono Mountains region to enjoy the clean, cool air and relaxing environment. Golf in the PoconosWith more than 250 holes of scenic, challenging golf and more than 85,000 yards of picturesque fairways and greens, the region has come to be known as the "Myrtle Beach of the North." But even non-golfers will find plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. The region boasts fine white-water rafting and canoeing on its many rivers and lakes along with excellent fishing. There's also horseback riding, hiking, and biking.

Winter Sports

Ski in the PoconosFor winter sports, there are seven major ski areas, plus five resort ski areas, with outstanding "Learn to Ski" programs for beginners, as well as, challenging runs for the more expert. Other winter sports include ice fishing, snow-mobiling, cross-country skiing, sledding, tobogganing, and snow tubing.

Many Pocono restaurants have an excellent reputation for fine food and impeccable service, offering a wide range of cuisine types.

Location

Tucked into the southern portion of the Pocono Mountains, Monroe Country is on the bustling Northeast corridor that stretches from Boston to Washington, DC. Interstate 80 puts New York within two hours of driving time and Ohio within five. A short distance north, I-84 connects the region to New England. The Lehigh Valley and the Harrisburg area are also within easy reach.

Delaware Water GapWhile it is conveniently located within a driving distance of important metropolitan centers, Monroe County offers residents many other reasons to live and work in the area. Packed into its 609 square miles is a rare combination of breathtaking natural beauty, including the scenic Delaware Water Gap - an ideal setting for wholesome living and a wide variety of recreational services.

The interchanges between Interstate 80 and Interstate 380 provide direct connections to Interstate 81, Scranton, central New York, and Canada. Further to the west, Interstate 80 crosses the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for direct connections to Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, and points south. Interstate 81 also connects the area to Harrisburg and the south-central portions of Pennsylvania.

Visual Arts

Many professional artist make their homes and exhibit their work in the Poconos. Galleries specializing in a variety of styles, from contemporary to traditional, can be found along the back-roads and in downtown areas throughout the region. Workshops and classes, as well as clubs and associations, are available for those interested in any form of visual art including: crafts, photography, painting, and sculpture.

Performing Arts

A wealth of performance opportunities can be found throughout the area. From classical to jazz music, ballet to modern dance, or professional to community theater, there is something for everyone. Attending a dance performance, acting in a local theater, or singing in a choir - the region offers many chances to become part of its exciting performing arts community.
